Add A New Plant
Before adding a new plant, browse or search the database to confirm the plant you want to add has not already been added.
To add a new plant:
- Enter the plant's scientific name in the form below.
-
WikiGardens.com following the "Binomial nomenclature" (see Wikipedia:Binomial_nomenclature) for plant naming. Consequently, in order to create a unique plant topic name, you must enter, at minimum, Genus plus either species or variety. You can, or course, enter both species and variety.
-
If you are not sure about the plant's botanical name or are unsure what part of the name is the Genus, species, or variety (sub-species), please refer to a plant reference before entering it into the WikiGardens plant database. For background on botanical names, see Wikipedia:Botanical_name.
-
Capitalize the Genus but enter Species and Variety in all lowercase.
-
DO NOT include single quotes in the variety field.
-
DO NOT include the small or large "x" in the name. This designates a hybrid and should be set using the "Hybrid" drop-down. (See next instruction.)
- Select the type of hybrid, if applicable. If there is a small "x" between genus and species, it is a species hybrid. If there is a large "X" before the Genus, it is a genus hybrid.
- Click on "Create New Plant Record" button. If a plant by the same name already exisit, you will be taken to that record. Otherwise, you will be presented with a new, blank record.
- Enter all the values in the plant record form.
- Save the topic.
